On December 1, QuickBooks will make R9 an automatic update (until then, it's available as a manual release).
What It Means to You
Most accountants and their clients should probably accept the update to R9.
Most importantly, R9:
- affects QuickBooks 2009 and Enterprise 9.0
- improves data stability
-
fixes an ActiveX security problem for
users of QuickBooks 2009, 2008, and 2007 (QuickBooks
2006 is no longer supported; the fix is not required for
QuickBooks 2010)
-
IS NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE -- EVEN WITHIN THE SAME PRODUCT (however,
the Accountant's copy IS backwards compatible for 2009
and 2008 versions)
The last point is particularly important for three reasons:
- Accountants will have to coordinate with their clients' updates and individual needs.
- Clients should realize that R9 will significantly update the database structure
of their company file. Once updated,
their company data file will not open in previous
releases of QuickBooks -- even 2009 R8.
- QuickBooks customers who choose to update to R9 MUST
update all workstations using QuickBooks; any attempt to
open the updated company file from a workstation whose
QuickBooks software is not
updated will fail and an error message will be
displayed.
UPDATE 2009.1203
Intuit continues to respond to customer input concerning R9.
Issues have arisen particularly concerning client-server
installations of QuickBooks. Intuit has provided a direct
link to a dynamic webpage containing more information at

For those who are more comfortable with a shorter link, go

redirect you to the direct link above).
