I just sent this message to Washington via Congress.org:
Stephen Colbert's appearance in character at Rep. Zoe Lofgren's invitation
before the House Judiciary subcommittee concerning migrant workers and
immigration is yet one more blow to the credibility of the U.S. Congress --
and Speaker Pelosi's defense of Rep. Lofgren's invitation only makes matters worse.
I personally find Stephen Colbert entertaining, but Comedy Central and C-SPAN
are two different networks. If Rep. Lofgren wants entertainment, perhaps she
should pay for it instead of wasting taxpayers dollars for her amusement. Where
do the taxpayers go for a refund of the thousands of dollars wasted on this joke?
Any wonder American voters continue to exercise their constitutional right to
kick incumbents out of office? Any wonder that Congress' approval rating is at
an all time low -- regardless of party affiliation? This spectacle adds fuel to
the fire that Congress lives in an alternate reality.
Voters to Congress: DO YOUR JOBS OR PACK YOUR BAGS AND GET READY TO GO HOME. PLAYTIME
IS OVER.
The sad truth is, though, that the field of challengers often leaves voters with little
realistic choice. I sincerely hope this situation will change, but I don't look for
much improvement any time soon. I'm beginning to feel a bit like Dante, who saw the
inscription on the gates of Hell:
Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
