Mr. President:
In the face of mounting opposition to your plan to send more troops to
Iraq, Tony Snow responded, "If not this, what?" Tony Snow is an excellent
messenger, but you create the message. Permit me to translate the message
sent to the American people and the Congress by Mr. Snow's rhetorical
query: "Any plan, even a bad one, is better than no plan. You don't have a
plan either. Come up with a better idea or stop kibitzing."
Mr. President, this approach is not acceptable. You can't escape the onus
of your office by attempting to off-load the burden to others. You led us
into this mess in Iraq and it is your responsibility to lead us out.
Ann Richards' "pig with lipstick" analogy applies here. You need a better
plan.
No one says it will be easy, but you have a wealth of resources at your
disposal. Start by listening to the American people AND HEARING what we
are saying. If you keep an open mind, the way out may become clearer.
Good luck, and may God bless.
