On June 8, 2008, someone set fire to the Texas Governor's Mansion. This
mansion is one of the oldest continuously occupied executive residences
in the United States.
An arson investigation is still ongoing, but investigators currently
believe there was a political motive, and they are looking for someone
disgruntled with the political system, the Governor, or some similar aspect.
We need to stop. We need to reflect. We need to change.
There will always be those with mental and emotional problems. Few, if
any, would have anticipated the unstable person who poisoned the historic
Texas Treaty Oak in 1989 for reasons somewhat similar to those that led an
arsonist in 2002 to set Colorado's worst forest fire. The reasons? Their
love life wasn't working out.
We need to stop. We need to learn, and we need to teach our children,
better ways of conflict resolution and better ways to deal with our own
inner conflicts. Maybe -- just maybe -- we can then see a world where
destruction is "the road less traveled."
