Problems Sending Email?

May 28, 2008

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) block port 25 because they are concerned that spam can be relayed through this port. Your SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) email setting may be using this port. There are a couple of situations where this can cause you problems.

  • If you maintain your own domains and use a webhost separate from your ISP, and if you use an email program such as Outlook to send your email, there may be a conflict between your webhost email port settings and your ISP ports allowed. One way to resolve the conflict may be to contact your ISP. They may unblock the port if you make your request in writing.
  • If you are using a public network, such as at a hotel, the public network may block your email SMTP port. In this case you obviously won't be able to request that the ISP unblock the port. Instead, contact your email provider. They likely have an alternate email server port for use. Consult your email software for instructions on how to set the SMTP port.
